    • Flurazepam is prescribed for people who have severe difficulty sleeping
    • Flurazepam can help with both falling asleep and preventing multiple awakenings through the night
    • Flurazepam is often prescribed to treat insomnia that is related to anxiety
    • This medication is only designed for short term use
    • Flurazepam can lead to sleepiness or a slower reaction time the following day – it is important not to drive or operate heavy machinery if this is the case
    • Flurazepam is sometimes known by its trade name of Dalmane
    • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Flurazepam is a benzodiazepine medication. It alters the way chemicals or neurotransmitters behave in the brain, leading to calming feelings. This calming effect can help to settle severe anxiety, making sleep more likely. Flurazepam not only helps with falling asleep, but helps to prevent multiple awakenings during the night. This is particularly helpful for people who struggle to stay asleep.

Another type of medication that can help anxiety and help a person to sleep better is diazepam (Valium). You can also purchase diazepam online here at EU Meds.

The course of flurazepam should be as short as possible. Often, it is prescribed on an intermittent basis so that flurazepam is only taken when required. Overall, the duration of treatment should be just a few days, up to two to four weeks maximum. This time period includes the time required to slowly reduce the dose.

Flurazepam is a tablet that should be swallowed with water at bedtime. It can be taken even if your stomach is empty.

The most common doses of flurazepam are 15mg or 30mg at bedtime. This dose has been found to give adequate sleep with minimal night-time awakenings, but minimises the risk of feeling sleepy or having slowed reaction times the following day.

If you do feel sleepy or notice that you have slower reaction times the following day, you must not drive or operate heavy machinery or tools.

Some people, including the elderly or those with liver or kidney disease, may be advised to take a lower dose of flurazepam.

Your doctor may advise on a dosage of flurazepam that is slowly tapered down at the end of the course to avoid symptoms of withdrawal.

It is important that flurazepam is only used in the short term. If it used for longer than a few weeks there is a risk of it becoming less effective. The risk of becoming dependent on the medication also increases. Long term use of nitrazepam can lead to feelings of addiction.

Like all medications, flurazepam can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

    • Daytime sleepiness and feeling less alert
    • Confusion
    • Tiredness
    • Headache
    • Muscle weakness
    • Feeling unsteady on your feet
    • Blunting of the emotions.

If these symptoms do not settle or are troublesome, you should speak to your GP for advice.

If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Flurazepam may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your doctor if you have:

    • Ever been addicted to alcohol, drugs, or benzodiazepines
    • Lung disease or difficulties breathing
    • Liver or kidney disease
    • A mental health disorder including obsessive compulsive disorder, psychosis or phobias
    • Sleep apnoea
    • Myasthenia gravis
    • Ataxia.

Flurazepam may not be suitable for women who are trying to conceive, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

You should abstain from alcohol when taking flurazepam. As flurazepam can lead to sleepiness and feeling unsteady, drinking alcohol may compound this side effect.

Some medications can interact with flurazepam. You may be advised that flurazepam will not suit you if you already take:

    • Another benzodiazepine medication
    • Opioid medications
    • Anti-epileptics
    • Antidepressants
    • Sedative antihistamines
    • Hypnotic medications
    • Neuroleptic medications
    • Certain blood pressure medications including beta blockers
    • Certain antibiotics
    • Certain muscle relaxants.

You should also tell your prescriber about any herbal remedies or supplements you take. This will allow your prescriber to check that flurazepam will not interact with them.

It is important that your doctor checks that flurazepam will suit you. Your doctor should complete a thorough health questionnaire and review your current medications before prescribing this medication.
