  • Lucette is a combined oral contraceptive pill
  • It is taken when you are sexually active but don’t want to get pregnant
  • It contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone that a woman’s body naturally produces each month
  • Lucette is the trade name, and the active ingredients are drospirenone and ethinylestradiol
  • The combined pill is not suitable for all women, as it can increase the risk of blood clots and some cancers
  • Lucette does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

The active ingredients in Lucette work in three ways to prevent you from getting pregnant.

  1. Lucette prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg
  2. Lucette increases the thickness of the cervical mucus so that sperm cannot enter the uterus (womb)
  3. Lucette stops the lining of the uterus from thickening, so that a fertilised egg would be unable to implant and begin developing.

Lucette is a reversible form of contraception. This means that its effects are not permanent, and it only protects you against pregnancy when taken as prescribed. It also means that if you wanted to become pregnant in the future, you could begin trying for a baby after stopping Lucette.

Lucette can be stopped at any time if you wish to become pregnant.

One Lucette tablet is taken every day for 21 days. After this, you start a 7 day phase where no tablets are taken. During this 7 day break, you are likely to have a withdrawal bleed which is similar to a period.

Once the 7 day phase is over, you should start a new strip of 21 pills and start the cycle again.  You should start a new strip of Lucette on the same day each month. You must continue this pattern to prevent a pregnancy.

Lucette can be taken with or without food. You should take it at the same time every day.

Each Lucette tablet contains 3mg of drospirenone (synthetic progesterone) and 0.03mg of ethinylestradiol (synthetic oestrogen).

Like all medications, Lucette can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Low or depressed mood
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods
  • Thick vaginal discharge.

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Another common side effect is a vaginal yeast infection. Seek medical advice from a doctor or pharmacist to treat this.

Occasionally, Lucette can cause more serious health concerns. Lucette can increase your risk of:

  • Blood clots to the legs – seek medical advice immediately if you experience a painful, red, or swollen leg
  • Blood clots to the lungs – seek help immediately if you experience breathlessness, chest pain, or cough up any blood
  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Liver disease.

Lucette may not be suitable if you, or a close family member, have been diagnosed with one of these conditions. If you have concerns about any of the above conditions, you should speak to a doctor.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Lucette may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Have, or have ever had, cervical or breast cancer
  • Have, or have ever had, blood clots including those in the legs or lungs, or risk factors for these conditions
  • Have ever had a heart attack or stroke
  • Are having an operation that will lead to a period of immobilisation
  • Have blood clotting abnormalities
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have gallstones
  • Have otosclerosis (a form of deafness)
  • Have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Have Lupus (SLE)
  • Have sickle cell disease
  • Have migraines
  • Have angioedema (swelling of different parts of the body)
  • Have porphyria
  • Are breastfeeding.

Some medications can interact with Lucette. You may be advised that Lucette will not suit you if you already take:

  • Medications for epilepsy or seizures
  • Some antibiotic and antifungal medications
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
  • Antiretroviral medications for HIV or AIDS.

Because Lucette may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Lucette will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Lucette will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Lucette will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
