Priligy for Premature Ejaculation

  • Priligy contains the active ingredient dapoxetine
  • Priligy pills are a prescription premature ejaculation treatment to facilitate delayed ejaculation
  • Priligy is a sexual medicine that is only taken before you have sex, it is not a regular medication
  • Common side effects include dizziness, feeling faint and nausea (feeling sick)
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

For more information on the prescription PE medication please refer to the Priligy patient information leaflet.

Take a look at the video below to get a simple overview of Priligy, including what it is used for, dosages, side effects and precautions:

Dapoxetine

Premature ejaculation is a form of sexual dysfunction used to describe an orgasm in a man that occurs more quickly than he or his partner would like during sexual intercourse. Sometimes premature ejaculation during sexual activity can be related to stress or anxiety, and may resolve on its own. In other cases, men may require treatment with dapoxetine. Priligy has been designed to prolong the time it takes to ejaculate.

Priligy (dapoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication, taking action on serotonin levels of a patient with PE. Dapoxetine treatment causes a delayed response in the areas of the brain that cause ejaculation during sexual activity, meaning that it takes longer to reach an orgasm, by boosting the serotonin level in the body (Kendirci et al, 2007).

Because Priligy works quickly, it should be taken 1 to 3 hours before you expect to have sex. It does not need to be taken every day.

Priligy Tablets

Priligy is a tablet. It should be swallowed whole as this helps to avoid the bitter taste. Taking Priligy with a full glass of water can help to minimise side effects. You can take Priligy with or without food.

Priligy 30mg / 60mg

Priligy tablets are available in two strengths, 30mg and 60mg.

Men should initially take the 30mg dose. If this dose is not high enough, and no severe side effects are experienced, then the dose can be increased to 60mg taken when required. However, increasing the dose can increase the risk of side effects.

Only one Priligy tablet can be taken in a 24 hour period.

Priligy Side Effects

Like all medications, Priligy can have some side effects that can impact general health. The most common side effects include:

  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Headache.

Drinking a full glass of water when taking Priligy can help to minimise the side effects. However, if they persist or become troublesome, you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Feelings of dizziness and/or fainting are more likely if you are taking alpha-blocker medicines for high blood pressure or an enlarged prostate (InformedHealth.org (2018)). If you experience dizziness or feel faint, you must not drive or operate machinery until this side effect subsides.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Priligy may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Have a heart problem like heart failure
  • Heart problems such as ischaemic heart disease (a previous heart attack or angina)
  • Tend to faint
  • Have heart valve disease
  • Have an abnormal heart rhythm
  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder
  • Have epilepsy
  • Have glaucoma
  • Have kidney problems / kidney disease
  • Have liver disease
  • Have a history of mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, mania, serious mood swings, or severe depression
  • Have ever had an allergic reaction to a medication.

Your prescriber can then advise whether Priligy is a suitable medication for you.

Certain medicines can interact with Priligy. You may be advised that Priligy will not suit you if you already take:

  • Medications for erectile dysfunction
  • MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) and other antidepressants
  • Medicine for schizophrenia or other psychiatric disorders
  • Tramadol
  • Triptans for migraine
  • Linezolid
  • Lithium
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum).

Priligy should not be used in combination with alcohol or recreational drugs.

Priligy FAQs

It is not recommended to take Priligy at the same time as erectile dysfunction medications (including PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil), as ED medication can cause an adverse event such as low blood pressure. Patients with cardiovascular disease should use all erectile dysfunction drugs (such as a PDE5 inhibitor) with caution (Waller et al, 2018). Tuken et al (2019) found that headaches, palpitations, and flushing were the common adverse effects of dapoxetine/sildenafil combination therapy to treat adult men with premature ejaculation and concomitant erectile dysfunction. You should always consult your doctor, healthcare professional or pharmacist prior to starting Priligy (Dapoxetine), whether or not you suffer from any chronic conditions, to ensure that it is the safest and most suitable premature ejaculation (PE) treatment to suit you - they will check your blood pressure and pulse when sitting down and after standing up before prescribing Priligy, to avoid any issues relating to orthostatic hypotension (Kowey et al, 2011).

Whilst Priligy (Dapoxetine) is an effective oral tablet premature ejaculation treatment (McMahon, 2011; McMahon, 2012; Du et al, 2019; Liu et al, 2022), another effective alternative PE treatment is EMLA cream, which comes in a topical cream form and contains the active ingredient combination of lidocaine/prilocaine (Atikeler et al, 2002).

Daproxetine (the active ingredient in Priligy), has been associated with vasovagal-mediated (neurocardiogenic) syncope, although no other adverse cardiovascular adverse events we noted in the same study by Kowey et al (2011).

Yes, following dapoxetine therapy, patients have reported various improvements such as significantly reduced interpersonal difficulty, greater control over their ejaculation and an overall increase in satisfaction with sexual intercourse (McCarty & Dinsmore, 2012; Kaufman et al, 2008).

Some studies suggest that patients using SSRI's such as daproxetine may eventually discontinue using it. For example, McMahon, C. (2011), found that 30% of patients (men suffering from lifelong PE) eventually discontinued therapy. Similarly, premature ejaculation patients may discontinue using daproxetine due to the cost and over-reliance on the drug for adequate sexual function (Park et al, 2017).

There are natural techniques, such as doubling the number of orgasms a man has each week (DerSarkissian, C., 2022), that can be tried to help to treat premature ejaculation naturally. If these prove unsuccessful you can speak to a doctor or healthcare professional to see if a prescription medication such as Priligy (dapoxetine) could be suitable for your requirements.

Every patient suffering from a sexual problem such as premature ejaculation has a unique individual experience when taking Priligy as a treatment.

Many users have provided a Priligy review and researchers have studied how effective the active ingredient dapoxetine is. Please refer to Mid-Day.com and Nice.org.uk, alongside McCarty & Dinsmore's (2012) study into the effectiveness of Dapoxetine as a premature ejaculation (PE) treatment.
