Salbutamol Inhaler

  • Salamol is an inhaled medication prescribed to treat the symptoms of asthma in adults and children
  • It can also be used to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in adults
  • Salamol should be taken when symptoms of a cough, wheeze, tight chest or breathlessness start
  • One puff of Salamol contains 100mcg of salbutamol
  • Salamol starts working within a few minutes and lasts for about four to six hours
  • Salamol is the trade name, and the inhaler contains the active ingredient salbutamol
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Salamol is a short acting beta 2 agonist and works as a bronchodilator. This means that the salbutamol contained within it helps to dilate, or widen, the airways. This makes it easier to breathe in and out, reducing other symptoms such as cough and wheeze, too.

Salamol works within minutes to provide relief, and should be taken during an exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Some people will also be advised to take Salamol prior to exercise or before being exposed to a known allergen, such as a dog.

Salamol is taken when symptoms of asthma or COPD are present. It is important to follow both the prescriber’s instructions, and those of the manufacturer, to check that you are taking your Salamol inhaler properly.

Salamol is available as a CFC-free inhaler and as an easi-breathe inhaler. The CFC-free inhaler can take some practise to take effectively and some people find it helpful to use their inhaler in front of a mirror whilst learning how to take it.

Shake the inhaler prior to use. Gently breathe out before placing the inhaler in your mouth. Press the canister down, and then inhale deeply. This should draw the Salamol deep into your lungs as you breathe in. Hold your breath to avoid exhaling the medication immediately. Now, take a few steady breaths. If you are prescribed a second dose, repeat these steps once more.

Salamol inhalers can be combined with a spacer device to make it easier to get the medication into your airways. When a spacer is prescribed, the Salamol is sprayed into the spacer chamber, and you can then inhale it at your own pace. This reduces the need for co-ordination, and is ideal for children and adults who find taking an inhaler difficult.

Salbutamol 100mcg

Be sure to follow the personalised prescription you have. Each puff of Salamol contains 100mcg of salbutamol, and it is commonly advised to take one to two puffs of your inhaler during an exacerbation.

If taking two puffs does not settle your symptoms, you may need to take further puffs. Do not exceed the maximum number of doses you can take in a 24 hour period. Seek advice urgently if your symptoms persist despite taking your inhaler.

If you are having to use your Salamol regularly to treat symptoms, or take it more than twice a week, you may need to increase or change your preventer inhaler. Speak to a medical professional to discuss this.

Salamol is commonly prescribed, but like most medications it can have side effects. Most of the side effects will settle with time, but if they do not then speak to a healthcare professional for advice. The most common side effects include:

  • Tremors or feeling shaky
  • Feeling aware of your heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Mild muscle cramps or tension.

Rarely, more serious side effects can occur. These include:

  • A pounding heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle pain or weakness.

You should speak to a doctor straight away if any of these serious side effects occur.

If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Salamol may not be suitable for all patients. Those with thyrotoxicosis, HOCM, arterial hypertension, tachycardias and diabetes may require a different medication. That’s why at EU Meds we conduct an online consultation with a health questionnaire to check that Salamol is suitable for you.
