More Information

  • Trajenta is a tablet medication used to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes
  • Trajenta has two main mechanisms to help keep blood sugar levels within the normal range
  • Trajenta is a brand of the medication linagliptin
  • Trajenta may be prescribed in addition to other anti-diabetes medications
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Our bodies rely on insulin which is made by the pancreas. Insulin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. If the body starts to make less insulin, our blood sugar levels are left to rise unchecked. In some people, the body has also stopped responding properly to any insulin that is being produced. The rising blood sugar levels will lead to diabetes.

High levels of glucose in the blood over a prolonged period can cause damage to the blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, and eyes. Some patients will eventually require amputation of extremities including the toes or feet. It is therefore very important to keep your blood glucose levels under control, even if you currently feel well.

The linagliptin in Trajenta stimulates the pancreas to make more insulin, helping to bring the blood sugar levels down. It also reduces the production of glucagon, which in turn prevents the liver from releasing as much sugar into the bloodstream.

These actions combined help to lower blood sugar levels. After starting Trajenta, it can take up to three months to see the full effect. It is therefore important to see this as a long term treatment and take your medication regularly.

Trajenta is a tablet that should be swallowed whole with some water. The tablet can be taken with or without a meal, at any time of day.

It is best to take your medication at the same time each day for the best clinical outcome. Taking Trajenta in this way also makes it easier for you to remember to take it. If you forget to take a dose, take it was soon as you remember. However, a double dose should not be taken on the same day.

The most common dosage of Trajenta is 5mg (one tablet) taken once daily.

If you already take insulin or a sulphonylurea, your doctor may recommend reducing the dose of one of your existing tablets to avoid low blood sugar levels or hypoglycaemia.

Like all medications, Trajenta can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia or a ‘hypo’)
  • Inflammation or infection of the nose or throat
  • Cough
  • Constipation
  • Skin rash
  • Increase in lipase or amylase on blood testing.

Low blood sugar or hypos are characterised by feeling hungry, shaking or trembling, feeling anxious, tired, dizzy or sweaty. A suspected hypo should be treated immediately with a sugary sweet or drink, and medical assistance.

With the exception of low blood sugar, the side effects of Trajenta are uncommon. However, if they occur or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice. If you think you have an infection, you should speak to your doctor as antibiotic treatment may be required.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Trajenta may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Have type 1 diabetes rather than type 2 diabetes
  • Have ever had pancreatitis
  • Have an allergy to linagliptin or any other ingredient in Trajenta
  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Your prescriber can then advise whether Trajenta is a suitable medication for you.

Some medications can interact with Trajenta. You may be advised that Trajenta will not suit you if you already take:

  • Rifampicin
  • Medications for seizures or epilepsy
  • Other medications for type 2 diabetes.

Because Trajenta may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Trajenta will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Trajenta will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Trajenta will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
