You will need to answer a few questions about your health before completing purchase of this item.

  • Colgate Duraphat is a prescription only toothpaste
  • Colgate Duraphat contains high levels of fluoride to help prevent dental caries, a type of tooth decay
  • Colgate Duraphat helps to strengthen tooth enamel to prevent decay
  • The toothpaste has a spearmint flavour
  • It is important to read the prescribing information to ensure you use Colgate Duraphat correctly
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Colgate Duraphat is used in preventing dental caries. Whilst the regular toothpaste brands available in pharmacies and supermarkets contain fluoride, Colgate Duraphat contains a higher concentration of fluoride. The lower strength prescription Colgate Duraphat contains 2800 ppm fluoride (2.8 milligrams of fluoride per 1 gram of toothpaste), and the higher strength toothpaste contains 5000 ppm fluoride (5 milligrams of fluoride per 1 gram of toothpaste).

The fluoride inhibits demineralisation and encourages remineralisation across the surface of the tooth. The fluoride works on both the tooth enamel, and any exposed dentine (the main supporting structure of the tooth that lies beneath the enamel).  This helps to prevent dental caries from occurring or worsening.

Colgate Duraphat should be used in place of regular toothpaste. You should brush your teeth for at least one minute every morning and evening.

You should brush your teeth vertically, from the gum to the tip of the teeth. Once brushing is complete, the toothpaste should be spat out. For best results, do not to rinse or drink any liquids for 30 minutes after brushing.

Each time you brush your teeth, apply a 1cm ribbon of Colgate Duraphat to your toothbrush before thorough brushing.

Colgate Duraphat can be prescribed for adults as well as children over the age of 10.

Side effects occur very rarely when using Colgate Duraphat. Side effects are only likely to occur if a substantial quantity of the toothpaste is ingested, and any side effects usually involve digestive symptoms or problems.

It is incredibly rare to have an allergic reaction to Colgate Duraphat. However, if you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

You should report all other suspected side effects to your doctor or dentist, who will be able to advise you further.

Colgate Duraphat may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your doctor if you:

  • Have hereditary fructose intolerance.

This toothpaste can be used when pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. However, it is not suitable for use in children under the age of 10 years.

There are no known problems with using Colgate Duraphat when taking other medications.

Because Colgate Duraphat may not suit everyone, EU Meds will complete a consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Colgate Duraphat will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Colgate Duraphat will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Colgate Duraphat will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
