Coversyl Arginine is a medication that belongs to a family of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors. It is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

However, Coversyl Arginine can also be prescribed to protect the heart from further damage after a heart attack or to treat heart failure. ACE inhibitors block the production of angiotensin II. By blocking this hormone, the blood vessels become wider and the kidneys start to work more effectively. This in turn helps to lower the blood pressure to a healthy level.

Coversyl Arginine also helps in heart failure by reducing the amount of fluid in your blood vessels and protecting the heart from excess strain.

Coversyl Arginine is available as a tablet. It should be taken in the morning with some water, before eating breakfast.

When taking Coversyl Arginine to treat high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is 5mg once in the morning. If your healthcare professional feels that this has not adequately reduced your blood pressure, the dose may be increased to 10mg once daily after one month of treatment.

The first dose of Coversyl Arginine can make you feel a little dizzy. It is therefore advised to take the first dose at bedtime. Elderly patients may be started on a dose of 2.5mg once a day to avoid dizziness after taking the medication.

When treating heart failure, the usual starting dose is 2.5mg in the morning. Your prescriber may increase this to 5mg in the morning after 2 weeks, as long as no side effects are experienced.

Like all medications, Coversyl Arginine can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, especially when you stand up.

    • If this occurs, stand up slowly or remain seated for a while when getting out of bed.

  • Dry, irritating cough

    • Speak to your doctor if this persists, as another medication may better suit you

  • Nausea or vomiting (feeling sick or being sick)
  • Constipation
  • Headaches
  • Feeling tired
  • Blurred vision
  • Pins and needles
  • Skin rash.

If any of these side effects persist or are troublesome, you should speak to your doctor for advice.

If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Coversyl Arginine may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your doctor if you:

  • Have liver disease
  • Are dehydrated and therefore already lack fluid in your blood vessels

  • Co-trimoxazole (an antibiotic)
