Etrivex Shampoo contains a steroid called clobetasol propionate. Using a shampoo is one of the easiest ways to treat psoriasis affecting the scalp. 

Psoriasis causes irritation of the skin, including the scalp. Skin inflammation occurs when skin irritation causes the release of substances in the skin. These substances widen the blood vessels and make the area of skin look swollen and red, and feel itchy and sore. The clobetasol in Etrivex Shampoo prevents the release of the substances that start the inflammatory process. This helps to settle an exacerbation of psoriasis down.

The shampoo should be applied directly onto a dry scalp (unlike normal shampoo, you must not wet the hair first). Take care to cover all of the psoriasis lesions, but try not to apply it to areas of healthy skin. The shampoo should be used sparingly: around 7.5ml (1.5 teaspoons) of liquid is enough to cover the entire scalp. 

Once applied, the shampoo should be left in place without covering for 15 minutes. Wash your hands carefully after applying the shampoo to the psoriasis lesions.

After 15 minutes, the shampoo should be thoroughly rinsed out with water. The hair can then be washed using regular shampoo if needed to aid washing. The hair can then be dried as usual. 

The shampoo should be applied once daily. 

The maximum duration of treatment should be four weeks. Once an improvement is seen, the applications should be reduced or spaced out. Depending on any ongoing symptoms, you may be able to use a milder treatment instead of Etrivex Shampoo, or stop treating your scalp completely.

If you experience another exacerbation in future, Etrivex Shampoo can be used again.

Like all medications, Etrivex Shampoo can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

• Sensation of skin burning
• Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis).

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Very rarely, using large quantities of Etrivex Shampoo can cause clobetasol to enter your bloodstream. If you experience symptoms such as increased fat on your chest or tummy, a rounded, puffy face, easy bruising, weakness, or changes in your mood, you should speak to a doctor straight away.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Etrivex Shampoo may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

• Have any areas of infected skin on your scalp – including bacterial, herpes, chicken pox, fungal or parasitic infections
• Have ulcerous wounds on your scalp
• Have a specific skin disease including skin tuberculosis.

If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, Etrivex Shampoo will only be prescribed if it is deemed to be necessary based on your symptoms.

You must not use Etrivex Shampoo on your eyelids or near your eyes, due to the risk of glaucoma and cataracts.
