Fexofenadine is a type of anti-histamine. Anti-histamines are used to relieve allergies including allergies to pollen, and cat and dog hair. More Information

  • Fexofenadine is an anti-histamine
  • It is used to manage symptoms of allergy including itchy eyes or a runny nose
  • It is sometimes used to treat eczema, conjunctivitis and reactions to insect bites
  • It is classed as a non-drowsy anti-histamine, but care should still be taken as some people will feel drowsy
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

If your body thinks that a normal particle, such as pollen or cat hair, is an allergen, it will begin an allergic response. This involves making histamine, which leads to unpleasant symptoms such as a rash or nasal congestion.

Fexofenadine works by blocking histamine, and therefore preventing the symptoms of the allergy.

Fexofenadine is less likely to make you feel sleepy or drowsy than some other anti-histamines.

Fexofenadine tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. The tablet should be taken before a meal.

Fexofenadine only needs to be taken on the days that you have symptoms of the allergy. This is likely when the pollen count is high, for example during the spring and summer months. You may also need to take the tablets if you have been, or are likely to be, exposed to something you’re allergic to.

Fexofenadine comes in three different strengths: 30mg, 120mg and 180mg.

When taking it for hay fever, a common dose is 120mg once a day.

If you are taking fexofenadine to treat hives, the usual dose is 180mg once a day.

As with all medications, fexofenadine can have some side effects. The common side effects include:

  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling dizzy.

If these bother you or persist, talk to a healthcare professional.

Serious side effects are very rare. If you notice a fast or irregular heartbeat you should call a doctor straight away.

If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Fexofenadine isn’t advised for everyone and during your Consultation with EU Meds you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire to check that fexofenadine is suitable for you. Tell you prescriber if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to any medicines in the past
  • Have problems with your liver or kidney
  • Have heart problems
  • Have epilepsy or seizures
  • Have an allergy test booked (as this may affect the results).

Fexofenadine can make some people feel drowsy. It is important to check your reactions before driving or using tools and machinery.

You need to avoid drinking grapefruit juice, apple juice and orange juice when taking fexofenadine. Drinking these juices whilst taking fexofenadine may increase your risk of getting side effects.

It is also wise to avoid alcohol when taking fexofenadine, as the combination may increase feelings of sleepiness.

A prescriber from EU Meds will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that fexofenadine will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, you can order fexofenadine online for home delivery.
