More Information

  • Fucidin cream contains fusidic acid, an antibacterial ingredient
  • Fucidin cream can help to clear skin infections quickly
  • It is prescribed for impetigo, infected eczema or dermatitis, or infected cuts
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Fucidin cream is prescribed for skin infections suspected to be caused by staphylococcal bacteria. This is a common form of skin bacteria that can cause infections on areas of open or inflamed skin, such as a cut or graze, or as a result of eczema or another inflammatory skin condition.

Fucidin cream contains the antibacterial fusidic acid. This substance stops the growth of bacteria, effectively treating the skin infection. You should see an improvement in your skin infection within a few days.

Fucidin cream should be applied to the skin three to four times daily. If it has been recommended that you cover the area with a dressing, you may need to apply Fucidin cream less frequently.

Continue using the cream for as long as it has been prescribed for. Even if the infection shows signs of improving, finish the course to avoid the infection recurring.

If the infection does not show signs of improvement within a few days, speak to your doctor, as treatment with oral antibiotics may be required.

Always wash your hands before and after applying the cream. If the cream gets into your eye (this may be more likely if you are treating an area on your face), you must wash the area with plenty of water.

A thin layer of cream should be applied to the infected lesions. The cream should be gently rubbed into the infected area.

Like all medications, Fucidin cream can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Skin irritation or discomfort at the site of application
  • Rash or redness of the skin.

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Fucidin cream may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Fucidin cream
  • Are using another topical skin medication.

Fucidin cream is suitable for use in pregnancy, or for women who are trying to conceive. Fucidin cream is safe to use when breastfeeding, however, it is best to avoid using it on the breast. For skin infections affecting the skin of the breast, consult your doctor.

Because Fucidin cream may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Fucidin cream will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Fucidin cream will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Fucidin cream will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
