How Does Metrogel Work?
Rosacea is a condition that most commonly affects the face. The nose, cheeks and forehead are often involved, but rosacea can also occur on the neck, chest, and ears. Rosacea causes flushing, redness that may look like sunburn, red spots and whiteheads, and increased visibility of the blood vessels. The spots can be caused by the presence of bacteria.
People with rosacea can feel self-conscious about their appearance, but many people also seek treatment because the spots can be painful, and the inflammation can cause a burning or stinging sensation.
Metrogel contains the antibiotic metronidazole. Metronidazole is used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections which commonly affect the skin. The antibiotic works by altering the DNA in the bacteria, so that it cannot continue multiplying. This stops the infection and helps to resolve the skin symptoms of rosacea.
When used for infected skin ulcers or wounds, Metrogel helps to stop any bad odour associated with the infection.
How is Metrogel Used?
Metrogel is a gel preparation.
For rosacea, it should be applied to the area twice daily in the morning and evening. Often, treatment is required for three or more months, with some people using it for up to two years. If there is no clear improvement in the first few months, the treatment should be stopped.
For infected ulcers, the area should be cleaned thoroughly. The gel should then be applied, and the area then covered with a dressing. The gel should be used once or twice a day. Often, your doctor will arrange for a nurse to help you with this procedure.
Dosage of Metrogel
The strength of metronidazole in Metrogel is 0.75%.
Are there any Side Effects?
Like all medications, Metrogel can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:
- Dry skin
- Redness of the skin
- Itching
- Skin discomfort including a burning or stinging sensation.
These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.
Occasionally, Metrogel can cause rosacea to worsen. If so, the treatment should be stopped.
Contact with the eyes and mouth should be avoided. If this occurs, wash the area with water as soon as possible.
Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.
