Propecia is a form of medication known as a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. Propecia is used to treat male pattern baldness. It does so by preventing the enzyme, 5 alpha-reductase, from creating dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT interferes with the hair growth cycle and leads to weaker hair follicles that fall out easier.

Plus d'informations

Propecia is a male pattern baldness medication that belongs to a group known as 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors. Propecia works by preventing the enzyme, 5 alpha-reductase, from creating dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT interferes with the hair growth cycle and leads to weaker hair follicles that fall out easier.

DHT plays a large role in male pattern baldness. By preventing its production, Propecia, or giving it its generic name, Finasteride, can promote healthy hair growth in men suffering from mild-to-moderate inherited male pattern baldness. Propecia usually starts to work within three months of starting the treatment, and its effectiveness may vary among men.

It is effective at preventing further hair loss, and may also promote some growth of new hair. However, usually, it will not be possible to grow back all the hair that has been lost. The new hair that has been grown with the help of Propecia will stay for around one year after you stop taking the medication.

Propecia is an effective medication for preventing male-pattern baldness due to its ability to specifically inhibit 5-alpha-reductase. This is the enzyme that converts testosterone into the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This can worsen the symptoms of male pattern baldness.

Propecia has a 1mg dosage of the medication finasteride. This can effectively lower DHT levels in the scalp by up to 60% when it is taken daily. DHT plays a major role in shrinking or weakening hair follicles. This will eventually lead to baldness. A 60% reduction in DHT has been proven to stop the progression of hair loss in 86% of men during clinical trials of Propecia. 65% of trial participants also had what was considered to be a substantial increase in hair growth.

Lowering DHT levels is the only proven way of addressing the hair loss process. Propecia and Finasteride are recommended to be the first line of attack for men who are needing to treat their male pattern baldness.

The main overarching benefit of using Propecia is it is proven to play a role in stopping the progression of male pattern baldness. The other major benefit it provides is significant hair growth in the majority of men who use it.

Propecia Tablets

The recommended dosage of Propecia is 1mg taken daily at the same time of day, every day. Propecia can be taken with or without food, it is simply important that it is taken on a regular basis for it to have a significant effect.

If your doctor has recommended that you take a different dose it will likely be because of body weight, or other medical conditions you may have. It is important that you do not change the way you are taking Propecia without first consulting your doctor.

You should only ever take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed to you by your doctor. If you miss a dose you should skip the missed dose and then continue with your regular schedule. Make sure you do not take a double dose if you miss one.

Do not dispose of this medication in wastewater or household rubbish. For more information on how to dispose of the medication when it has either expired or it is no longer needed then you should speak to a pharmacist.

Propecia 1mg

The usual dose of Propecia is one tablet taken daily at around the same time of day, each day. Do not take more than one tablet in a 24-hour period unless you have been specifically told to by your doctor.

Different medications affect individuals differently. Not everyone who uses Propecia will experience the possible side effects, and some may experience different side effects to others.

The following are the most common side effects of Propecia:

  • Reduced semen levels
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced sexual appetite

Most of the side effects of Propecia are rare. However, it could lead to more serious problems. You will need to seek medical attention or consult your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • Breast tissue tenderness, lumps, enlargement, or nipple discharge
  • Pain in the testicles

You should stop taking Propecia entirely and will need to seek immediate medical attention if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Allergic reaction symptoms including rashes, itchiness, and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face.

Propecia should not be taken by a man who is allergic to Finasteride, or any of its inactive ingredients. It is important to note that Propecia should also not be taken by children or women.

Before taking Propecia, let your doctor know about any medical conditions and allergies that you might have.

Male breast cancer has been reported in a small number of people taking finasteride. It is unknown whether finasteride can cause breast cancer, but it cannot be ruled out. Get in touch with your doctor immediately if you notice any pain or enlargement in your breast, lumps, or nipple discharge

Prostate cancer may be linked to finasteride also. There may be an increased risk of developing a rare type of high-grade prostate cancer, of which the risk is still considered very small. Propecia is not an approved treatment for prostate cancer.

Propecia should also be used with caution by people suffering from impaired liver function. If you fall into this category then you should contact your doctor to discuss how Propecia may affect your medical condition.

Propecia is also absorbed into the system of a pregnant woman. If taken by a pregnant woman, the medication may cause abnormalities to the genitals of an unborn male baby. A crushed or broken Propecia tablet should not be handled by women who may become pregnant. This is because the medication can be absorbed into the system through skin contact. In the same vein, a breastfeeding mother should not handle finasteride because it will pass into her breast milk.

When you are thinking of taking Propecia, share with your doctor a list of all the medications you are currently taking or have recently taken. This is important so you can discuss with your doctor the risk of interactions between the medications you are taking and Propecia. Make sure to tell your doctor also if you regularly use caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, or illegal drugs. These can affect how your medications work and may need to be stopped.
