More Information

Yasmin Contraceptive Pill

  • Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill
  • It is taken when you are sexually active but don’t want to get pregnant
  • It contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone that a woman’s body naturally produces each month
  • Yasmin is the trade name, and the active ingredients are drospirenone and ethinylestradiol
  • The combined pill is not suitable for all women, as it can increase the risk of blood clots and some cancers
  • Yasmin does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

The active ingredients in Yasmin work in three ways to prevent you from getting pregnant.

  1. Yasmin prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg
  2. Yasmin increases the thickness of the cervical mucus so that sperm cannot enter the uterus (womb)
  3. Yasmin stops the lining of the uterus from thickening, so that a fertilised egg would be unable to implant and begin developing.

Yasmin is a reversible form of contraception. This means that its effects are not permanent, and it only protects you against pregnancy when taken as prescribed. It also means that if you wanted to become pregnant in the future, you could begin trying for a baby after stopping Yasmin.

Yasmin can be stopped at any time if you wish to become pregnant.

Yasmin Pill

One Yasmin tablet is taken every day for 21 days. After this, you start a 7 day phase where you do not take a tablet each day. During these 7 days, you are likely to have a withdrawal bleed which is similar to a period.

Once the 7 day phase is over, you should start a new strip of 21 pills and start the cycle again. You must continue this pattern to prevent a pregnancy.

Yasmin can be taken with or without food. You should take it at the same time every day.

One Yasmin tablet should be taken every day during the 21 day phase. At the end of the 21 days, you have a 7 day break where you do not take Yasmin.

Each Yasmin pill contains 3 milligrams of drospirenone and 0.030 milligrams of ethinylestradiol.

Yasmin Pill Side Effects

Like many contraceptive medications, Yasmin can cause some people to experience side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Low or depressive mood
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods
  • Thick vaginal discharge

If these do not settle, you should speak to a healthcare provider for advice.

Another common side effect is a vaginal yeast infection. Seek medical advice from a doctor or pharmacist to treat this.

Occasionally, more serious side effects can occur. These include:

  • Blood clots to the legs, lungs, heart, brain, liver or kidneys

You should seek immediate medical advice if this occurs.

The combined pill can increase the risk of certain cancers. You should be mindful of:

  • Breast changes which could be a sign of breast cancer. Changes could include a lump, discharge or bleeding from the nipple, the nipple becoming inverted, or changes to the skin of the breast.
  • Signs of cervical cancer including pain and vaginal bleeding between periods or after sex. However, cervical cancer can occur without symptoms. It is important to keep up to date with cervical screening by attending for your smear test.

The increased risks means that Yasmin may not be suitable for you if you or a close family member have had a diagnosis of one of these forms of cancer or a blood clot. You should tell your doctor or prescriber if you have had any form of cancer or a previous blood clot.

If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Like all combined contraceptives, Yasmin will not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you have ever been diagnosed with any of the following conditions:

  • Liver or gallbladder disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Cervical or breast cancer
  • Any form of blood clot including a DVT, PE, heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Migraine
  • Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Haemolytic uraemic syndrome
  • Sickle cell anaemia
  • Hypertriglycerideaemia
  • Varicose veins or thrombophlebitis
  • Lupus
  • Porphyria
  • Otosclerosis (hearing loss)
  • Angioedema (swelling of the body parts)

Yasmin may also not be suitable if you are overweight or obese, or if you smoke.
