Estradot is a medication used to treat women who are experiencing the symptoms of the menopause. Estradot is a patch preparation that contains a synthetic version of oestrogen called oestradiol. Read up

    • Estradot is a patch medication that is available in three strengths
    • Estradot contains a synthetic version of oestrogen called oestradiol
    • Estradot does not contain the other female sex hormone progesterone, and is therefore not suitable for all women
    • Estradot is best suited to women who have had a hysterectomy
    • Estradot is effective in treating symptoms of the menopause including vaginal dryness, night sweats and hot flushes
    • Some women may need to take a progesterone containing hormone replacement therapy in addition to using an Estradot patch
    • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Oestrogen levels fall around the time of the menopause, which can lead to symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Estradot contains a synthetic version of oestrogen called oestradiol. When the patch is applied to the skin, oestradiol is absorbed into the bloodstream helping to top up oestrogen levels and offset symptoms of the menopause.

Each Estradot patch needs to be used as prescribed. It is important that a patch is applied to clean, dry skin on the abdomen (belly).

The patch will need to be changed twice weekly (that is, changed every three or four days on a cycle).  Apply each new patch in a new area away from the location you have just used.

After removal, dispose of the patch carefully away from children.

If you still have a uterus, you may be advised that you also need to take a progesterone medication. Your prescriber will discuss this with you.

Estradot patches are available from Eumeds in three different strengths:

    • 25 micrograms per 24 hours
    • 50 micrograms per 24 hours
    • 100 micrograms per 24 hours.

Although each patch should stay on for three or four days, the patch strength refers to the amount of oestradiol that will be released in each 24 hour period.

It is best to use the lowest strength patch that controls your symptoms, as this will reduce the risk of side effects.

Like all medications, Estradot can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

    • Redness at the site of the patch
    • Itching and rash
    • Breast pain or enlargement
    • Changes to menstrual bleeding patterns
    • Headache
    • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
    • Nausea (feeling sick)
    • Indigestion
    • Diarrhoea
    • Abdominal pain or bloating
    • Acne
    • Back pain
    • Vaginal infections
    • Weight increase or decrease
    • Swelling, fluid retention or oedema
    • Changes to mood including depression and anxiety.

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Using HRT can cause a slight increase in the risk of some cancers including breast and uterine cancer. The risk increases when using a higher strength preparation for a long period. It is important that the benefits of using Estradot outweigh the potential risks.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Estradot may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

    • Have, or have ever had, breast cancer
    • Have, or have ever had a cancer stimulated by oestrogen, such as a uterine (womb) cancer
    • Have undiagnosed vaginal or genital bleeding
    • Have endometrial hyperplasia, fibroids, or endometriosis
    • Have, or have ever had, a PE (pulmonary embolism) or DVT (deep vein thrombosis) – a blood clot to the lungs or leg
    • Have a thrombophilic disorder (blood clotting disorders)
    • Have angina or have had a heart attack (myocardial infarction), or any other form of arterial blood clot
    • Have had a stroke
    • Have liver disease
    • Have porphyria
    • Have hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Have diabetes
    • Have migraine
    • Have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus)
    • Have epilepsy
    • Have asthma.

If you become pregnant whilst taking Estradot, the patches must be stopped immediately. Estradot is not suitable for use when breastfeeding.

Some medications can interact with Estradot. You may be advised that Estradot may not suit you if you already take:

    • Phenytoin, phenobarbital, or carbamazepine for seizures or fits
    • Rifampicin
    • Rifabutin
    • Nevirapine
    • Efavirenz
    • St John’s Wort (Hypericum Perforatum).

Because Estradot may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Estradot will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Estradot will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Estradot will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
