More information

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is used to relieve pain from different conditions such as headaches, cramps, dental pain, arthritis, and muscle aches.  Ibuprofen is also used to help reduce fever, as well as providing relief from minor aches and pains caused by a cold or the flu.

Ibuprofen works by blocking the production of natural substances that result in inflammation in the body. By doing this, ibuprofen decreases pain, swelling, and fever.

There are many benefits of taking ibuprofen when you are struggling with certain conditions. Ibuprofen is effective at helping to reduce pain, swelling, and fever in the person who takes it.

Ibuprofen Tablets

Ibuprofen is a tablet taken orally usually every 4 to 6 hours with the help of a glass of water, except when your doctor recommends otherwise. After taking the medication you should not lie down for up to 10 minutes. If you find that ibuprofen causes stomach upset you may wish to take it with a meal, milk, or an antacid.

Ibuprofen is often prescribed by your doctor based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. You should start taking ibuprofen at the lowest possible dose in order to reduce the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often than what is recommended by your doctor, or by the package label. For medical conditions such as arthritis, take this medication as directed by your doctor.

Some medical conditions, such as arthritis, will only feel the full benefit of ibuprofen after two weeks. Take ibuprofen when the first signs of pain occur. If you wait too long then your pain may worsen, and the medication may not work as well.

If your condition persists or worsens, or if you feel you may have a serious medical problem, you should seek medical attention right away. If you are taking the nonprescription ibuprofen then you should consult your doctor immediately if fever worsens, if it lasts more than three days, or if pain worsens or lasts more than 10 days.

It is important that you read the directions on the product package before you start taking ibuprofen. If ibuprofen tablets are prescribed by your doctor, read the medication guide provided before you start taking your prescribed medication. If you have any questions about using ibuprofen then you should ensure to ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Ibuprofen 600mg

The usual dosage of Ibuprofen for adults is one tablet every four to six hours, or as often as prescribed by your doctor. Ibuprofen dosage is based on the body weight of a child should they need to use it. Read the package direction to determine the correct dosage for your children based on their weight.

If you have been prescribed with ibuprofen then they believe that the benefits are greater than the risk of side effects. Many people who use ibuprofen do not experience any serious side effects.

The most common side effects of ibuprofen usage include nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, headache, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness or drowsiness. You should inform your doctor immediately if any side effects persist or worsen.

Ibuprofen may lead to a rise in your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly when you are taking Ibuprofen and report to your doctor if the readings are high.

You need to inform your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, such as:

  • Difficulty with vision
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Hearing difficulty
  • Symptoms of kidney problems
  • Unexplained stiff neck
  • Symptoms of a heart failure

Ibuprofen may rarely cause liver disease. You should seek medical help immediately when you observe symptoms of liver damage. Symptoms include dark urine, loss of appetite, persistent nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, and yellowing of the eyes or skin.

A serious allergic reaction to Ibuprofen is also rare. You will need to seek immediate medical help if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, rashes, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.

Before you take ibuprofen your doctor will need to be informed if you are allergic to it, or if you have other forms of allergy. Ibuprofen may have some inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more details about the subject.

Kidney problems may sometimes occur with the use of NSAID medications such as Ibuprofen. These problems are likely to occur if you have a heart or kidney disease, if you are dehydrated, if you are an older adult, or if you take certain medications. You can prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids to reduce the risk of a kidney problem.

Before undergoing any surgical procedure you should inform your doctor or dentist that you have used prescribed ibuprofen. Do not drive a vehicle, operate machinery, or do anything that requires alertness until you are sure that you can do the job safely. Report to your doctor if you are using marijuana.

Ibuprofen may also cause stomach bleeding. You are at a higher risk of stomach bleeding if you have daily use of alcohol and tobacco. To negate this risk you should limit alcohol consumption and stop smoking.

Ibuprofen may also make you more sensitive to the sun. When you have taken ibuprofen you should limit your time in the sun. Ensure to use sun cream and stay covered when going outdoors.

Elderly adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Ibuprofen, especially kidney problems, stomach or intestinal bleeding, and worsening heart conditions.

Women who are thinking of having a baby should discuss with their doctor the benefits and risks of this medication. Topics of discussion include trouble getting pregnant, or miscarriage. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to get pregnant. Ibuprofen should be used only when it is really needed during pregnancy. It is not recommended for use during the first and last trimesters of pregnancy. This is because of the possible harm to the unborn baby and the possible interference with normal labour or delivery.

Ibuprofen also passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing child. You should speak to your doctor before you start to breastfeed when using ibuprofen.

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or it may increase your risk for serious side effects. Share with your doctor a list of all the medications you are currently taking in order for him to check their possible interaction with Ibuprofen.

Some medications may also interact with ibuprofen. You should ask your doctor to check that it is okay to use with other medications you are taking.

You will need to check all the medications that you are currently taking. Look out for medications that contain pain relievers or fever reducers. These are similar medications to ibuprofen and may increase the risk of side effects. You can however continue taking low-dose aspirin if it is prescribed by your doctor.
