More information

  • Logynon is a combined oral contraceptive pill
  • It contains synthetic versions of the natural hormones produced by a woman’s body, oestrogen and progesterone
  • Logynon is the trade name, and the active ingredients are levonorgestrel (synthetic progesterone) and ethinylestradiol (synthetic oestrogen)
  • It is taken if you want to avoid getting pregnant whilst sexually active
  • Logynon may also be taken to make periods lighter or less painful
  • The combined pill is not suitable for all women, as it can increase the risk of blood clots and some cancers
  • Logynon does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • Logynon is a ‘phasic’ contraceptive pill, with three different pills which must be taken in a certain order during each cycle
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Logynon contains two hormones that would naturally be produced in a woman’s body. When taken in the dose contained within the pills, they prevent you from getting pregnant.

Logynon works in three ways to prevent a pregnancy from occurring.

  1. Logynon prevents an egg from being released from the ovaries
  2. It makes the mucus around the cervix thicker to stop sperm from entering the uterus
  3. It prevents the lining of the uterus from thickening, so that a fertilised egg would be unable to implant and begin developing.

The combined pill is one of the most effective reversible forms of contraception. In this context, the word reversible means that if you stop taking it, you could get pregnant. It is therefore not a permanent choice and should not prevent you from getting pregnant in future if you wanted to.

Logynon contains three different coloured pills which must be taken in order. Each phase of pill contains a different amount of each hormone.

One tablet should be taken each day at the same time. The tablets can be swallowed with some water, and can be taken with or without food.

When you first start taking Logynon, you should take it as follows:

  1. Starting with the phase I (brown) tablets, start taking 1 pill each day at the same time.
  2. Once you have finished taking the phase I tablets, move straight on to the phase II pills (white). Take 1 white pill each day.
  3. The final pills are the phase III pills which are ochre (yellow) coloured pills. Take 1 pill each day until you reach the end of the pack.

Each pack contains 21 tablets in total. At the end of 21 days (when you have taken all the tablets, you start a 7 day break during which time you are likely to have a withdrawal bleed (a bleed that is like a period). If you take Logynon as described above, contraceptive cover starts from the day of your first pill. Start your next strip of pills at the end of the 7 day break. In this way, every strip of pills should start on the same day of the week.

If you are switching to Logynon from another combined contraceptive pill, take your first Logynon pill on the first day immediately after the end of the previous oral contraceptive course. In this way, additional contraceptives are not required.

If you are switching to Logynon from a progesterone only pill (POP or mini-pill), the first tablet of Logynon should be taken on the first day of bleeding, even if you have already taken a POP that day. In this way, additional contraceptives are not required.

Like all medications, Logynon can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Increased weight
  • Headache
  • Depressed mood
  • Breast tenderness or pain.

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Occasionally, Logynon can cause more serious health concerns. Logynon can increase your risk of:

  • Blood clots to the legs – seek medical advice immediately if you experience a painful, red, or swollen leg
  • Blood clots to the lungs – seek help immediately if you experience breathlessness, chest pain, or cough up any blood
  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Liver disease.

Logynon may not be suitable if you, or a close family member, have been diagnosed with one of these conditions.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Logynon may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Have, or have ever had, cervical or breast cancer
  • Have, or have ever had, blood clots including those in the legs or lungs, or risk factors for these conditions
  • Have ever had a heart attack or stroke
  • Are having an operation that will lead to a period of immobilisation
  • Have blood clotting abnormalities
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have gallstones
  • Have otosclerosis (a form of deafness)
  • Have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Have Lupus (SLE)
  • Have sickle cell disease
  • Have migraines
  • Have angioedema (swelling of different parts of the body)
  • Have porphyria
  • Are breastfeeding.

Some medications can interact with Logynon. You may be advised that Logynon will not suit you if you already take:

  • Medications for epilepsy or seizures
  • Some antibiotic and antifungal medications
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
  • Antiretroviral medications for HIV or AIDS
  • Etoricoxib.

Because Logynon may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Logynon will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Logynon will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Logynon will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
