Telfast is a type of antihistamine. It contains the antihistamine fexofenadine. 

Antihistamines are used to relieve allergies to a variety of allergens including pollen, dust, and pet hair. They can help to resolve the unpleasant symptoms of an allergy including hives, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. Telfast is classed as a non-drowsy antihistamine, but care should be taken as it can still cause drowsiness in some people.

If your body thinks that a normal particle, such as pollen or cat hair, is an allergen, it will mount an allergic response. This involves making histamine which leads to unpleasant symptoms such as a rash, itchy eyes, or nasal congestion. 

The fexofenadine in Telfast works by blocking histamine, and therefore preventing the symptoms of the allergy. Fexofenadine is less likely to make you feel sleepy or drowsy than some other antihistamines. 

Telfast tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. The tablet should be taken before a meal. 

Telfast only needs to be taken on the days that you have symptoms of the allergy. For those with hay fever, this is likely to be when the pollen count is higher during the spring and summer months. For other allergies, you may need to take the tablets if you have been, or are likely to be, exposed to something you’re allergic to, such as pet hair.

Telfast is available in two different strength tablets, 120mg and 180mg.

For adults and children aged 12 and over, the recommended starting dose is 120mg of Telfast taken once a day before a meal.

Like all medications, Telfast can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea (feeling sick).

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Serious side effects are very rare. If you notice a fast or irregular heartbeat you should call a doctor straight away.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Telfast may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to any medicines in the past
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have heart disease or an abnormal heart rhythm
  • Have an allergy test booked (as this may affect the results)
  • Are elderly
  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Your prescriber can then advise whether Telfast is a suitable medication for you.

Some medications can interact with Telfast. You may be advised that Telfast will not suit you if you already take:

  • Another antihistamine medication
  • Antibiotics or antifungal medications
  • Medications for acid reflux or stomach ulcers.

Telfast can make some people feel drowsy. It is important to be aware of your reaction times and any drowsiness before driving or using tools and machinery.

You need to avoid drinking grapefruit juice, apple juice and orange juice when taking Telfast. Drinking these juices whilst taking the medication may increase your risk of getting side effects.

It is also wise to avoid alcohol when taking Telfast, as the combination may increase feelings of sleepiness.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Telfast will not interact with them.
