More information

  • The gel should be applied to the affected area of skin
  • Rozex Gel helps to manage the redness and spots associated with rosacea
  • Treatment often continues for several months
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects and cautions.

Rosacea is a condition that most commonly affects the face. The nose, cheeks and forehead are often involved, but rosacea can also occur on the neck, chest, and ears. Rosacea causes flushing, redness that may look like sunburn, red spots and whiteheads, and increased visibility of the blood vessels. The spots can be caused by the presence of bacteria.

People with rosacea can feel self-conscious about their appearance, but many people also seek treatment because the spots can be painful, and the inflammation can cause a burning or stinging sensation.

Rozex Gel contains the antibiotic metronidazole. Metronidazole is used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections which commonly affect the skin. The antibiotic works by altering the DNA in the bacteria, so that it cannot continue multiplying. This stops the infection and helps to resolve the skin symptoms of rosacea.

Rozex Gel should be applied to the area twice daily in the morning and evening. Often, treatment is required for three to four months, with some people using it for up to two years. If there is no clear improvement in the first few months, the treatment should be stopped.

The strength of metronidazole in Rozex Gel is 0.75%. It should be applied to the affected areas of the skin in a thin layer.

Like all medications, Rozex Gel can have some side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Dry skin
  • Redness of the skin
  • Itching
  • Skin discomfort including a burning or stinging sensation.

These side effects are likely to settle down, but if they persist or become troublesome you should speak to your doctor for further advice.

Occasionally, Rozex Gel can cause rosacea to worsen. If so, the treatment should be stopped.

Contact with the eyes and mouth should be avoided. If this occurs, wash the area with water as soon as possible.

Serious allergic reactions happen very rarely. If you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) including breathlessness, lip swelling or tongue swelling, call 999 immediately.

Rozex Gel may not be suitable for everyone. You should tell your prescriber if you:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or any other medication
  • Regularly drink alcohol or have alcohol dependency
  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Your prescriber can then advise whether Rozex Gel is a suitable medication for you.

Some medications can interact with Rozex Gel. You may be advised that Rozex Gel will not suit you if you already take:

  • Another skin medication or antibiotic
  • Warfarin.

Because Rozex Gel may not suit everyone, we will complete a Consultation with you including a health questionnaire. This will ensure that the medication will be suitable for you.

A qualified prescriber will review your current medications, including any herbal remedies or supplements, to ensure that Rozex Gel will not interact with them.

Once prescribed, Rozex Gel will be ordered on your behalf via electronic prescription. Rozex Gel will then be conveniently dispatched from one of our partner pharmacies.
