More Information

  • Sildenafil belongs to a group of medications classified as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors.
  • Sildenafil is only taken prior to sexual activity.
  • It increases the flow of blood to the penis to help men get an erection.
  • Sildenafil takes 30 to 60 minutes to work, and many men can take it up to five hours before stimulation and still achieve an erection.
  • It is important to read the patient information leaflet prior to use.

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, has a number of causes. It is more common in men over the age of 40. Occasional difficulties achieving or maintaining an erection are common, and can be caused by excessive worrying, stress, tiredness or drinking too much alcohol.

Medical causes of erectile dysfunction can lead to more regular erectile difficulties. Clinical causes include problems with the blood vessels, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, spinal injuries and nerve damage. When there is a medical cause, it is important to treat this appropriately. However, Sildenafil can be a beneficial additional treatment for erectile dysfunction in conjunction with other medical management.

To achieve an erection, arousal is required. During stimulation, nerve messages cause the muscles within the penis to relax, allowing blood to flow in. Blood fills open spaces in the corpus cavernosum of the penis, causing expansion of the penis until an erection is achieved.

When erectile dysfunction is caused by narrowing of the blood vessels of the penis, Sildenafil can cause them to dilate. This increases the amount of blood that can flow into the penis, initiating and helping to maintain an erection alongside arousal. Sildenafil will only help you to achieve an erection when you are stimulated or aroused.

Sildenafil Tablets / Viagra Tablets

Sildenafil is available in different forms including tablet and liquid. Tablets should be swallowed with water. The most common dose is 50mg taken around an hour before you expect to have sex. For the best results, it is advised to take Sildenafil on an empty stomach. Taking it with food may mean that it takes longer to work.

If your prescribed dose does not help you to achieve an erection, or if your erection doesn’t last for as long as you would like, you can speak to a prescriber to find out whether a higher dose might be appropriate.

Sildenafil 100mg / 50mg / 25mg

Sildenafil tablets come in a range of strengths ranging from 25mg to 100mg. Many men find that 50mg helps to achieve and maintain an erection. However, the dose can be increased to 100mg if a stronger dose is required.

Viagra Dosage

Some men will notice side effects when taking 50mg of Viagra, and so they may choose to reduce their dose to 25mg. A prescriber can advise on an appropriate dose for you as an individual.

Only one dose of Sildenafil should be taken in a 24 hour period.

Viagra Side Effects

Like most medications, Sildenafil can cause some side effects. These are usually well tolerated, but you should speak to a medical professional if any of the following bother you or persist even after using Sildenafil for a while:

  • Hot flushes or facial flushing
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea (feeling sick) or indigestion
  • Blurred vision
  • Congested nose.

Most of these side effects are caused by Sildenafil initiating blood vessel dilation elsewhere in the body.

Some side effects are more dangerous. If you notice any of the following, you must call a doctor straight away.

  • Chest pain
  • A painful erection, or one that lasts over four hours
  • Sudden loss of vision, or decreased vision
  • Serious skin reaction
  • Seizures.

Sadly, Sildenafil won’t be the right choice for every patient. That’s why at EU Meds a prescriber will assess your health questionnaire to ensure Sildenafil will suit your needs. Sildenafil may not be suitable for patients who:

  • Take nitrates for chest pain
  • Take recreational drugs known as poppers
  • Have heart or blood vessel disease, including low blood pressure, angina, or a previous heart attack
  • Have had a previous stroke
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have a stomach ulcer or another condition that causes bleeding
  • Have sickle cell disease
  • Have ever had blood or bone marrow cancer
  • Have loss of vision
  • Have any disease or deformity of the penis
  • Are taking other medications
  • Have previously had a reaction to Sildenafil or another medication

Grapefruit juice should not be consumed when taking Viagra. This is because a chemical within the juice can increase the amount of Sildenafil in your bloodstream. This may increase the chance of you experiencing side effects.

Drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week can make it more difficult to achieve an erection. To ensure your Sildenafil tablets work to their full potential, avoid drinking alcohol prior to sexual activity.
