Can you take co-codamol with amoxicillin?

7th September 2022

Often, when you are prescribed medication there may be some lingering doubts over whether or not you will be able to take your new medication with any existing medication that you have. Whilst your doctor or independent prescriber will ask whether or not you are taking any other medications, it is natural to want to know for yourself before you begin taking any new medication. This is why many people will ask the question of whether they can take co-codamol at the same time as taking amoxicillin. In this EU Meds article, we will answer this question, as well as many more questions you may have regarding both co-codamol and amoxicillin, including what they both treat, and where, and how, you can purchase both of them.

What is co-codamol used to treat?

Co-codamol is a combination of two medications, codeine and paracetamol, that are used to treat and relieve pain. Co-codamol is most commonly used for treating muscular pain, headaches, toothache, and migraines. You will often be prescribed co-codamol if the other painkillers you are taking, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, are not working as well as you need them to. Co-codamol is a stronger pain reliever than these over-the-counter alternatives and is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain that weaker pain killers cannot treat effectively.

Codeine is one of the two medications inside co-codamol. Codeine is an opioid pain reliever, making it much stronger than paracetamol or ibuprofen. Opioid pain relievers work by attaching themselves to opioid receptors in the brain. They then disrupt pain signals sent to the brain, as well as having a mood-boosting effect.

Paracetamol is the other medication that is inside co-codamol. Paracetamol is an over-the-counter painkiller that is most commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain such as headaches, toothaches, and period pain. Paracetamol is also used to help lower temperature. Paracetamol works in a similar way to codeine, however, it is not an opioid medication. Paracetamol blocks pain messages from being sent to the brain.

What is amoxicillin used to treat?

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic treatment that is used to treat bacterial infections such as chest infections such as pneumonia, dental abscesses or ear infections, most commonly in children. Amoxicillin belongs to a group of medications known as penicillin antibiotics. These antibiotics work by stopping the bacteria from spreading when there is an infection. It also helps to kill any bacteria that is living in the infection, fully removing the infection from the infected area.

When you begin taking amoxicillin you may notice that your infection will begin to get better within a few days, however, it is important that you take your full course of antibiotics in order to treat and remove the infection fully. Usually, you will be prescribed amoxicillin in tablets or capsules, there is also a liquid version of the medication that is available. You can also get amoxicillin injected, however, this is only available when you are in hospital. You can only purchase amoxicillin when you have a valid prescription. This can be given to you by a doctor, or you can also complete an online consultation with EU Meds in order to get the medication you need.

Can co-codamol be taken with amoxicillin?

When you have been prescribed amoxicillin the chances are you are suffering from an infection that is causing some level of discomfort or pain. In order to treat this pain, you may look to over-the-counter painkillers in order to ease it. You can use over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to treat mild to moderate pain when you are taking amoxicillin. When you take amoxicillin however there is a chance that it can react to the other medications you take.

Thankfully, amoxicillin does not react to paracetamol and it also does not react to codeine. This means that you will be able to take co-codamol at the same time as taking amoxicillin. If you have a particularly bad bacterial infection then you may be feeling moderate to severe pain that is not being appropriately eased by paracetamol or ibuprofen, this is where you may be prescribed co-codamol in order to help ease the pain you are suffering with.
